Hi! I'm working in an ISP and we currently use MS Visio for accounting our networking resources. We have a huge networking diagram in one Visio document, which contains all our switches and routers and links between them. We have a note near each switch, which contains info about currently assigned and free ports and VLAN IDs assigned to each one port and simple description of what client this port belongs to. This file is shared between the members of our group on a network drive and each one edits it when required. The problem is that scheme doesn't support concurrent work. If one of the members of the group edits document, no one else can edit it at the same time. If you need to edit the document, you need firstly ask some people if they edit it. There are currently about 10 members in our group and this process of communication may be long and one of us can forget to close document after editing and go away from workplace. So, here is my question. Is there software for accounting networking resources that supports concurrent work with many people and can visualize networking scheme like Vision does? Thanks! |

While I don't have a recommendation, I will point out that that type of information is much better suited to a spreadsheet. The purpose of a topology drawing is to convey where things are and how they are interconnected. VLAN and port information is very structured and is much more easily managed in a spreadsheet. |

For documents that need concurrent editing, we use Google docs. It works out pretty well. |
