Hi Guys, I've just read this article on Networkworld and I'm a bit concerned. Maybe I'm wrong, but do you think this means that Cisco is really going to drop routing and switching? Please someone tell me that I'm being drastic and paranoic. |

I highly doubt it. Just go to their website, they have plenty of just released routers and switches. Even if they don't develop new ones, it would take some time for them to go obsolete in R&S. |

No, they've just been expanding into new markets. A word of caution: don't read too much into articles on NW. |

Thanks guys. I knew I had misinterpreted the article (a slightly misleading one, maybe), but I needed someone to confirm it. |

Articles like "Special Cisco Live Contest - Hottest Booth Girl" and Brad Reese's recklessly accusing Cisco of financial fraud are two examples which immediately come to mind. Network World's primary goal is not to inform or educate, but simply to draw as many readers as possible for the sake of turning a profit. Their articles are light on substance, riddled with ads and excessively paginated. There can be found the occasional decent article on Network World, sure, but as a rule I avoid them. If you'd like an alternative, consider Ars Technica. Their focus is much more broad but the quality of their content is superb. |

Hey caste381, even if the unlikely happened, your work toward your certs would not be wasted. Along your journey you should be learning concepts and gaining experiences that should be valuable across other vendor lines and even technology families, not only learning Cisco commands and ways of doing things. If Cisco stopped making routers and switches tomorrow, there would still be tons of green box hardware in companies and datacenters for years to come. |

I agree with dantel. Cisco is the industry standard right now, even if they disappeared off the face of the planet the skills you learn will still be valuable. Many other vendors have imitated Cisco's approach to configuration. But don't tie yourself too much to Cisco. Cisco's market share in routing and switching is on the decline and you will probably come across other vendors sooner or later. |

Try TheRegister at http://www.theregister.co.uk/hardware/networking/ Cisco just released new Nexus switches last month, new firewalls about 5 months ago, and the new uber fast CRS-3 core router a year ago so their not going any where in the routing, switching, firewall space anytime soon Also forgive me for mentioning Gartner but Cisco is usually always in the leaders quadrant for every category they compete in even though I am convinced Gartner hates Cisco |
