I have currently completed the CCNA curriculum through Cisco Net Academy and am looking to sit my certification exam. I was wondering from those out there who have sat it before a few things.

How did you go about study? Note-taking, Journals or Eidetic memory?

I have had a look at the what topics it covers but was asking from those who had sat it for their advice.

I currently use Packet Tracer, GNS3, Access to Jeremy Ciaoro's Nuggets and Half a dozen 1841's.

( At the course I am doing, Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Engineering, we also tackle 1 and 3 of CCNP so I have a knowledge a bit beyond CCNA. I also have sat and read through the entire CCNA Security Curriculum. )

Many Regards,

Anthony

Hi Anthony

One thing that I noted about the CCNA you need to know your sub netting very well there is one tricky simulation that I can remember that you need to spend time one that just relates to sub netting. There are other smaller question about the su bnetting. One thing that You have to keep in mind, don't think on the CCNP level though it is an advantage, but think CCNA you might over examine a question and confuse your self. The other simulation questions is very basic, change hostname, VTP configuration, setup OSPF, very simple. If you have doen a few labs on GNS 3, you would be good to go.

if your are looking at the exam, go with composite. In my opinion, Ive done it with CCNA and CCNP, the composite gets everything done in one go (the CCNP composite is just routing and switching).

Cisco, First of thank you for taking the time out to reply. I appreciate the feed back you have given me.

I have heard sub netting is a major component and I will brush up on that. Ah the composite exam sounds the go. I didn't really want to sit them as separate exams.

I have set the date so that I can't back out of it. Looking forward to becoming certified.

Thanks again,

Anthony

First of all it's not "sub netting",

It is "subnetting"!!!

so if you can't spell it right, you obviously won't be able to do it.

Maybe you should go do the I.T Essentials course first.

Well as said subnetting is important, cisco made a great way to learn this. It's a game that teach you subnetting. pratice make perfect

anyway I found it a nice study methode.

Other thing I want to warn you is about the wireless questions, make sure you work through it. I used the sybex book which I found a great help.

Hi Anthony,

I have to agree with Cisco, you have to know subnetting. My students in the CCNA Academy class have the biggest problem learning subnetting. Make a chart or just download the one from this website. Also go back over your labs from the Academy class. One of my students said there is a good video on YouTube.

Here are a few good books to read and have for a reference:

  • CCNA Preparation Library, 7th Edition ISBN-13: 978-1-58705-464-8; these books include questions and labs on CD-ROM.

  • CCNA Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack, CCNA Flash Cards and Exam Practice Pack ISBN-13: 978-1-58720-190-5; this book includes the Quick Reference Sheets on CD-ROM which are very good for a summary of the main CCNA topics.

  • CCNA Portable Command Guide, 2nd Edition ISBN-13: 978-1-58720-193-6

  • CCNA 640-802 Network Simulator ISBN-13: 978-1-58720-216-2; this includes 250 labs on DVD.

Buy a CBT from CBT Nuggets, Train Signal or Cisco Video Mentor. I prefer the CBT Nuggets personally.
