How about a 'port' to test ones login process using telnet or ssh. Just to know that we got our commands right. We could use the standard user A or B and fixed passwords one & two.

Upon successful login, recieve message saying so and automaticaly logs back out. That should minimize the time used by any one user so there would be no need for a schedule for the login testing port.
