Hello what is the difference between WIC and HWIC cards? For example HWIC-1T vs WIC-1T .And If I can install a WIC in a new router(1800,2800,1900,etc) and if I can install a HWIC in an old router like 3640. Thanks in advace.

Older routers have no slots for HWIC cards, and WIC are compatible with HWIC slots.

HWIC are more advanced and newer, they also support more connectivity methods.

Not all WIC cards are compatible with all HWIC slots.

For example, on the new ISR G2 models (1900, 2900, 3900, etc), the following WIC modules will not work in the HWIC slots:

WIC-1B-U-V2
WIC-1ADSL
WIC-1ADSL-DG
WIC-1ADSL-I-DG
WIC-1SHDSL-V2
WIC-1SHDSL-V3
WIC-1T
WIC-2T
WIC-2A/S
WIC-1DSU-T1-V2
WIC-1DSU-56K4

Notice that the WIC-2T is in that list? That is a huge pain for me, since I have around 100 WIC-2T cards and I can't upgrade from the 2800 series routers to the 2900 series routers without replacing them all! Grrrrr....

More info on the ISR G2 supported interface modules can be found here (unsupported modules are at the end):

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps10538/aag_c07_563807.pdf

Hopefully this serves as a warning for anyone thinking of upgrading to the ISR G2 routers and wanting to use any of these cards. Bottom line, check the specifics with Cisco before you make any assumptions or generalizations about what is and isn't supported.
