I find myself constantly switching between a Linux distro and Windows based on my current mood. What OS do you use? Why do you prefer it for network engineering? Thanks, Jason |

I prefer Gentoo Linux for its BSD-like 100% source-based package management. I run it on all my workstations and laptops. Not coincidentally, Gentoo also powers this site. |

I've done many Linux variants, but never attempt gentoo. I'm some what knowledgable about linux, I might have to try and give it a go. Any pointers? |

It depends on where I am. Home: Ubuntu, Office: Win7, Data center: CentOS. I had tried to install Gentoo a 6-7 years ago but found the installer to difficult even with the documentation right next to me. Have they made it any better? |

I mostly stick to MacOSX at this point for my main laptop that is the center of my universe. For linux, my first distribution was a rather large stack of SLS 1.44MB 3.5" floppies back in '95. :) For my personal co-located servers, they're all running CentOS 5 at the moment. Before that they were running Fedora Core, but got tired of the rapid update cycle for major revs and was WAAAAAAY behind. For the home server it is current CentOS5 as well, but I'll likely be replacing it with a Mac Mini Server running MacOSX Server soon. |

I have to post this excellent video about how "Every OS sucks" (and sometimes blows) even if it is little offtopic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d85p7JZXNy8 Enjoy :) -- watanen |

I love Gentoo Linux and would love to run it at work but alas I don't have enough time to try to get it to integrate into Active Directory. I guess I could run Gentoo with XP in VM to do support. Needless to say XP both at work and home. Looking into Windows 7. |

I use the best tool for the job. I tend to lean towards FreeBSD unless there is an OS that will do that particular job better. |

Mac OSX ('09 model 15" MBP 2.8Ghz, 4Gb ram, 500Gb 7200rpm drive) as for work, I do mostly *nix admin, so it's a combination of Linux (Redhat/Centos) and Solaris on x86 |

Win 7 on my Work Laptop, OSX on my home MacBook Pro. Ubuntu Linux on all my servers, IOS on Cisco routers hahaha Even Linux is in my Network routers, YES, Vyatta is my main firewalling platform, it is incredibly nice, Now I will make a Routing platform based on Vyatta as well, trying to make a 100% Linux based Network and get rid of Cisco except as a switching platform. |

FreeBSD and Debian are my Primary choices for my laptop, I do have Windows 7 on my Desktop in the garage for gaming of course! All my web sites run off of Debian LAMP virtual, firewall and DNS are on FreeBSD virts. I use BackupPC on a dedicated Debian box for backups. The rest is on work machines(Server 2008) or on a shared linux Dreamhost account. |

At home I run both Windows 7 and Fedora 12 on my desktop and CentOS 5 on my servers. At work it is Windows 7 on my laptop and Fedora 12 on my desktop. I use Fedora for most my daily tasks with Windows being used for the corporate applications... |

Been having an OS crisis at the moment. Was using vista, then ran Ubuntu (gnome) for a bit, OpenSuSe, then KUbuntu, currently giving Win7 a shot... but quickly anticipating my return to KUbuntu. The main reason I feel more aligned to linux is I quickly fell in love with bash. Being able to control a whole system in a CLI is amazing. Plus my two server boxes run Ubuntu Server so it just makes life easier. |
