I just finished blocking five CIDR prefixes for abusing the lab reservation system, all of them registered in India. It seems people cannot play nice and abide by the "one reservation per user" rule. From the Community Lab User Agreement:

One active reservation is allowed per user. A user cannot create a new reservation until his or her current reservation has expired or been deleted.

This means you do not create multiple accounts to create extra reservations for yourself and denying others fair access to the lab.

I feel the rules outlined in the agreement are very clear and fair to everyone. If you disagree, let me know with which point(s) you take issue.

With all my support.

I would like to give a note to all, we should be thankful that this great man made a lab for free, we have a real Cisco gear for free, lets at least stick to the rules.

Thanks Stretch,

Full support to Jeremy.

He must be the kindest and coolest guy on the earth to give away free access to a lab some of us never dream of .

Being a poor uni student(just a.t.m....hopefully)preparing for my CCNP cert, it was tonns of help,

Really appreciate it.

Jeremy, maybe you should give one reservation for symbolic fee - $1 or $2. It should help you keep the LAB up and eliminate people who abuse the LAB like this. You would simply checkout through paypal. Paypal cannot be spoffed so easy as email address ro created multiple times. You have reliable authentication.

@alhafoudh: A few people have suggested that, but I'm going to keep the lab 100% free. I have no interest in dealing with the extra overhead (and inevitable issues) involved with payments, even micropayments.

This is what I have got after waiting for over a month's time for a 6 hours lab schedule. I booked it on the 13th of this month. I know its just not me, coz I have heard from friends and colleagues that their ip block has also been banned.

Your IP prefix 59.180.0.0/15 has been banned from the lab for abuse. This was an administrative decision and will not be reversed.

Just because of a few guys who can't seem to understand this simple rule.

Stretch, are you by any chance going to reconsider your stand on this, ever? Is there another way to keep a check on trouble makers rather than banning the entire CIDR block? Perhaps even consider adding exceptions to a selected few who are genuine users and have been denied a fair chance.

I am aware of a few IP blocks that you have banned coz of the so called abuse. In most cases these are offices from where people book lab schedules, however these are NATed and to the outside world they are a single IP. Now since there are 100 odd employees behind the same IP, they are being penalised.

Would like to know your thoughts on this.

If you reserve the lab from a non blocked ip can you then use it from a blocked one?

While I'd like to discuss in detail how abuse is detected, it's only going to aid the people who are doing it. The bans are permanent, sorry.

Stretch,
unnecessarily, other people who are on same CIDR block are suffered by this, take an example of me, when I tried reserving the block, my IP also lying under this and I also get message "Your IP prefix 123.236.0.0/14 has been banned from the lab for abuse. This was an administrative decision and will not be reversed" - due to some other people, a lot community needs to suffer, I want to do some practise on your free lab but due to this restriction, I am not able to practise, I did my CCNP planning based on free access but now I am trapped.- suggest what to do?

Thanks in advance
Dave

Sorry, CIDR-based blocks are the only moderately effective method I have at my disposal if the lab is to remain free.

To everyone else here in India.

We need to understand:

  1. The world is not India. So stop believing that you will get away with your irresponsible, disrespectful and ungrateful attitude.

  2. The guidelines are explicitly clear - do not misuse the lab. If you do you will be denied access.

How difficult is that to understand ?

  1. "jkdave82" I understand it is not your fault, and I am not directing this at you but let us get paid back for what all of us over here do. And I wish in every field too. There is no other way that we are going to behave, otherwise.

  2. You are requesting a bypass from ban but do you realize how shameful it is to read a heading titled specifically - "A notice for users in India"; in an international forum.

  3. That too on a site which provides free access to users with very advanced equipment, so that they can hone their skills on real routers, FOR FREE.

  4. If we can't respect that, we don't deserve it, me included.

  5. I am not sorry for their actions, just ashamed. They must be reasonably literate but definitely uneducated.

To stretch.

  1. I am sorry that in my displeasure I did not mention the following:

a. You are doing a great service.
b. I know how critical this kind of lab environment is for serious network professionals.
c. A very honest and sincere thanks to you.

Navneet.
