Original Purpose of ASync Ports?

musicjunky 2 posts	25 Feb 2010 at 3:01 p.m. UTC I read in the Lab forum that Stretch said the 2509 is "just a crappy old box with a bunch of antique asynchronous serial ports which happen to work as console lines." So it makes me wonder, what was the original application for the ASync Ports if strictly for connecting to console ports?

ezziin 1 post	27 Feb 2010 at 11:41 a.m. UTC ASync in the old days was used to connecting dialup modems(v.90) and use the router as RAS or NAS server but now a days there are used in access servers to console configuration
