CCNA to get CCNP? - Packet Life

Hello, Is it possible to do the CCNP exams directly without the CCNA cert? Or Do I need to get first the CCNA and then the CCNP?

You can do the exams without CCNA, but even if you pass the exams you won't be CCNP certified until you have your CCNA cert. In other words, CCNA (or CCIE) is a prerequisite for CCNP certification, but there is no prerequisite for writing the CCNP exams themselves.

@joshlowe: very nice note, I did not even think about the possibility to take the exam.

But, if it is possible to complete the CCNP exam and success, what is the point for the CCNA exam being prerequisite.

Anyways, Josh is correct. You can only obtain CCNP certification if you have your CCNA cert.

@laith43d: Agreed, if you can complete your CCNP without CCNA, there is no point. But it's a money grab. And CCNA goes more into details of the base of networking (ie, packet trailer/header information etc)

Yea CCNA focuses (IMO) more on how a network operates and the flow of data. CCNP is more specific on technologies and how they work. So you may know everything about EIGRP but does that mean you can describe how a DEST MAC changes on a frame at each hop?

And of course the money grab.

If you are CCNA for example, does taking CCIE written exam re-certify the CCNA automatically? or what re-certifies the CCNA is only what has CCNA as prerequisite (like CCNP, CCSP, etc ...)?

all 642 exam numbers recertifies all previous exams, except ccie (written) that recertifies all

I would suggest to do the CCNA training first. That'll be sufficient as a network professional. Usually CCNP comes after once you've got well acquainted with CCNA. I'd also recommend Firebrand Training, they are excellent and legit to get your CCNA certification. You can also find a free CCNA exam practise test to assess your current abilities.
