Good day to all, I wanted to see what people thought of using an apple macbook for day to day tasks. I use a linux laptop at home and also have a windows 7 pc. Looking for other experiences to answer the "grass is greener" question.

I have always used Linux and Windows at work and home. Last October I bought a Macbook Pro 13" and then I sold it on craigslist about a month ago. They make some good looking hardware, but I don't prefer the OS. There is a reason that Parallels and VMWare Fusion are probably the two most commonly sold/pirated OSX apps sold. Well, maybe MS Office for MAC.

But remember my history is with Windows and Linux.

BTW MS Office on MAC is completely different than MS Office on Windows. It takes quite a while to get used to.

One other thing, when the DVD drive went bad it was cool that I could take it in the Apple store and have it replaced and fixed the same day.

A while back I was actually thinking about doing the same experiment at work, but with Linux instead.

My approach basically started with me listing all the functions I did on Windows and how I would do them on Linux. Then I evaluated all the software I used on Windows and thought about how I would get them to work on Linux (or find an open source alternative). In the end, I didn't go through with it for a couple of reasons…mainly because I wasn't too familiar with Linux's ability to connect to AD and other users' computer.

Your approach will probably have to be the same -- list how you use Windows and research how you can get the Mac to do it.

I suspect you may have better luck with the Mac, though.

I think all techies go through a Mac and/or Linux phase. Some (Like me) have gone through it numerous times. After a while you realize its just easier to use a Windows box to manage and support a Windows environment.

Nowadays I get my fix by running Linux in a VM on my Windows workstation.

I use Linux / Win 7. Classic scenario... Windows at work, both at home. But lately Ive been using Win7 more for my personal use but when working on lab I use Linux (KUbuntu). I still dont like Windows... but i cant game as easily on Linux.

I've used a Apple notebook since 2000 for work. It's pretty wonderful.

I use MacBookPro 15" for day to day administration, well you can say that windows is easier, but I prefer to run Linux in VirtualBox on MAC box rather than on Win box.

Yes, there are more tools on windows, but OSX is much lighter and faster, as well as by the time you get used to it, you will not notice that lack of tools, since you will find alternatives.

There are more Win users, so it is natural to find more Win tools, Nonetheless, I would like to mention one thing: I am network admin that uses MAC, and many use Win, but I think we are not comparable to admins like Brian Dennis or Brian McGahan, they both use MAC !!! Do you believe they lack tools??

Yersinia, Driftnet, Wireshark, Bmon, PackETH, QTNX, PyCracker (...) too many nice toys on Linux that cant be replaced on other OS.

All, thanks for the great responses. I started to think about the dilemma a went through the detailed analysis of apps that would be missing and believe you would use a mac for the aesthetics ( look, feel, shiny case etc) and stability with either one or both OSs ( win and linux ) as guests. If I do decide to make the switch I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.
