So I've got a couple 3640's that are only rocking 16MB (2x 8MB) Flash and a PCMCIA Compact flash adapter. After reading Stretch's blog I think to myself "Hey! I'll just get a generic 32MB (Max Supported) CF card and pop it in." No dice... "Hey!, I'll just get an offical Cisco 32MB CF Card and pop it in." No dice... Since the auction I bought the real Cisco CF Cards from was a lot of 3 and none of them work this way, but work fine in a Linux box... It's obvious 3640's don't like the CF / PCMCIA Adapter approach. Can anyone confirm or deny this possibility? |

Hello, I had the same problem as you, this is the poit of the 3640, you just can use LINEAR PCMCIA flash memory. I bought two cards of 8Mb each and they work, if you use ATA memory they are just read-only to the 3640. http://shop.ebay.es/i.html?_nkw=linear+flash&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=linear+compact+flash&_osacat=0 Kind regards |

Thank you for the info! I realized though that 3640 and 2600xm routers use the same flash simm's, and since I have two 2600xm's with 32mb installed I figure I'll upgrade those two and use the pair of 16mb sticks in the 3640. Gotta love it when things work out this way. |

I just was speaking about the compact flash (the one of the two slots on the front), not the simms, but it probably happens something similar, not all simms can work on the 3640 mainboard even if they are certified by cisco. |

I understand, I was just saying (unrelatedely) that I could do that instead. |

Been there tried this. At the end of the day they only support the ATA cards. Then there is the issue of the 3640's only support up to 64 MB ATA cards. I tried the adapter route I had a cisco and a simpletech (both worked in a 6500) 128 MB ATA card and neither would work in the 3640. Tried some funky partitioning and still no dice. The crappy thing is that the ATA cards are still expensive as crap and you need 32 MB min (I think) to run FW Service Set on the 3640. I have 3 of these guys and they are fun to play with but I just do my stuff in GNS3 now. Same models and I am not constrained by expensive memory. |

Yea, I had used GNS3 for awhile but it just got so tiresome when it would crash at inopportune times or if i wasn't on that computer i couldn't work on anything, that i decided with some poker winnings i would just make a home lab. |
